Medieval knight vs Samurai, who would win?
I say the knight. There is no way the katana could get through the plate armor and chain mail. The samurai would bend/break/chip his sword if he tried to cut through the armor.
You have to keep in mind in this type of question that samurai were not only masters of the sword, but also of the bow. It would make perfect sense for a samurai to take out a knight from a distance.
In close quarters combat, the tempering of a samurai sword was far superior to the swords of the same age in Europe. Further, even the best plate mail has chinks in, especially at the joints, so it is not hard to imagine finding a way to pierce it. Plate mail is also extremely bulky, and would likely hinder the knight to a great degree, while the samurai, wearing o-yoroi, would also be somewhat slowed down, the knight would lack a lot of mobility. In a way, all a samurai would have to do would be to knock the knight down, and that’s it.
You should also keep in mind the variety of weapons available. Even if a samurai couldn’t cut through a piece of armor, it would be perfectly logical to use some sort of blunt weapon (bo or jo staff, nunchaku, etc) and just cause massive blunt force trauma to the knight. A quick strike to the head would be all that would be necessary. Same goes for the knight of course; there is no reason he couldn’t use a quarterstaff or a maul or whatnot.
But, based solely on what I’ve seen from live action demonstrations and recreations, the knight’s downfall would be his lack of mobility, which the samurai could easily capitalize on. Yes, o-yoroi is bulking in its own way, but it retains more flexibility at the joints, providing for greater agility.
Oh, and if the knight had a shield, it would likely be wood, which a katana would go right through. If it were not wooden then it would likely be so heavy as to be more of a hindrance than a help.
So, while plate mail (and chain to a lesser extent) would provide some protection, the lack of mobility would lead to the knight’s downfall.
